Senator Smucker

December 14, 2011 - "The Sunshine Law is one of the fundamental building blocks of good government. This bill fixes the weakest point in a state law that has been in effect for twenty-five years now. A serious breach of trust in Lancaster County spotlighted the need for this reform measure. Early reports indicate that the new law is having the intended effect of encouraging greater compliance with open meeting requirements. Public officials seem to be taking a more careful look at what must be done in public view. There is less inclination to invent creative justifications for private discussions. At a time when public emphasis clearly is on accountability, people want to see how decisions are made, and what factors into the thinking of their elected officials."
